It’s a great time of year. College football is back, and my Wake Forest Demon Deacons are undefeated (1-0 still counts, right?).
The team has adopted a phrase I love: Built in the Dark.
Head coach Jake Dickert explains it this way: success doesn’t happen on game day. It happens in the early mornings, the film room, the weight room, the classroom, in the hours when nobody is watching.
Sounds a lot like building a relationship with Jesus.
Our spiritual lives are built in moments nobody else sees, as well. When the house is quiet, and we open our Bible instead of our phone. When temptation comes, and nobody would know if we gave in, but we turn toward Jesus.
When we apologize first. Tell the truth when a lie would be easier. Stop when anxiety rises and pray, “Father, I trust You, confidently.”
Those moments are doing more than we realize.
Jesus described a man who:
“…dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.”
Notice the order.
He dug deep before the flood.
That’s why building in the dark matters. We aren’t simply checking a devotional box. The Holy Spirit is forming something in us that we'll need when life gets hard.
He is teaching us to recognize His voice before confusion comes. To resist temptation before the stakes grow higher. To trust His character before the diagnosis, the business crisis, the wandering child, or the marriage struggle.
I needed that foundation when our family company burned to the ground. Standing there watching the fire rage, I didn’t suddenly manufacture faith. God had been preparing me long before I knew I would need it.
The same is true for you.
The quiet time with the Father today may become tomorrow’s courage. Today’s small obedience may become tomorrow’s ability to stand. Today’s surrender may become tomorrow’s confident trust.
So don’t underestimate the unseen work, my brother.
Meet with the Father. Stay close to Jesus. Obey the Spirit in the small thing He puts before you today.
The strength we need when the lights come on is built while nobody is watching.

What private habit, temptation, fear, or distraction might the Father be inviting you to surrender?
What is one “small” act of obedience the Holy Spirit is putting in front of you right now?
Don’t wait for the big test. What can you obey today?

Choose something concrete: meet with the Father before touching your phone, memorize one verse, confess a hidden struggle to a brother, or set aside ten quiet minutes each day to listen and pray.
